Biography:

Ani Kavafian - violin
Barbara Westphal - viola
Gustav Rivinius - cello

The Trio da Salò was founded in 1998 at the Festival “Incontri in Terra di Siena” (Italy) by violinist Ani Kavafian, violist Barbara Westphal, and cellist Gustav Rivinius. Their subsequent recital at the Schleswig-Holstein Festival in Germany was met with great enthusiasm by the press:  “A master trio, technically perfect, with the warmest sound, brilliant, elegant.... Three virtuosi, melting together in a transparent ensemble of the highest level.” (Süddeutsche Zeitung)

Violinist Ani Kavafian has performed with virtually all of America’s leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, and Minnesota Orchestra. Her numerous recital engagements include New York’s Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall (Lincoln Center), Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis, and the Krannert Center in Illinois. Her list of prestigious awards includes the Avery Fisher Prize and the Young Concert Artists International Auditions.

Violist Barbara Westphal concertizes regularly as soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States, Europe, and South America. Her many festival appearances include Santa Fe, Sarasota, and Vaasa (Finland) as well as the aforementioned Incontri in Terra di Siena. She won the only prize for solo viola in the 1983 Munich Competition, and was awarded the prestigious Busch Prize the same year.

Cellist Gustav Rivinius has performed as soloist with the Cincinnati, Saint Louis, Pittsburgh and National Symphonies, as well as the Radio Orchestra Leipzig, Helsinki Philharmonic, Bamburg Symphony, Gulbenkian Orchestra (Lisbon), Berlin Symphony, and Czech Philharmonic. His numerous prizes in national and international competitions include First Prize and Gold Medal at the 9th International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow.

The Trio da Salò’s first CD,  featuring works by Mozart and Beethoven, is available on the Kleos Classical label.
